HURRICANE MARIA RESPONSE 2018-2020

Puerto Rico STEP Program

Towards the latter part of September 2017, Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico just weeks after Hurricane Irma impacted the island earlier in the month. Hurricane Maria smashed directly into Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm near peak intensity. Both storms severely disrupted the economy, housing stock and infrastructure, with thousands of residents displaced  and left without viable housing or shelter. The storms left the island’s infrastructure weak and vulnerable. So in April 2018, Connect 1 Group engaged as a subcontractor to SLS, one of only four prime contractors on the island in the endeavor and immediately mobilized personnel, equipment and materials to Puerto Rico from the mainland. Within a very short period of time, Connect 1 was fully operational and performing the comprehensive scope of  work, which includes debris removal, home rehabilitation, logistics, compliance and construction oversight. Several months into the STEP program, Connect 1 was able to successfully help over 240 Puerto Rican residents get back into their homes. Through persistence and discipline, the dedicated staff of Connect 1 and the hand-picked subcontractors were able to execute safe and quality FEMA-compliant work, while also providing intense management to a myriad of logistical,  operational, administrative and personnel challenges inherent to a storm-ravaged location.
